Captioned Images Series: Job At The Prom Store Created: 11/04/2024 ![]() When the Girl Scout job didn’t pan out, Marion was back at it. She came home one afternoon with a triumphant smile and announced to Ian that she’d found him a new gig—this time, as a mannequin in a prom store. “A *mannequin*, Mom?” he asked, disbelief clear in his voice. Marion nodded enthusiastically. “Yes, Ian! It’s simple. All you have to do is stand around, pose a bit, and show off some of the latest apparel. They’re looking for someone who can give the store a bit more personality, you know?” Ian looked at her with a mixture of frustration and disbelief. “So… you want me to just stand there like a dummy while people stare at me?” “Oh, don’t be so dramatic,” she waved a hand dismissively. “You need experience, Ian, and until something else comes along, this will pay the bills. Plus, it’s indoors and air-conditioned! You’ll be comfortable.” She said it like that was supposed to make him feel better. With no other job prospects in sight, Ian reluctantly agreed. The next day, he put on the mint green halter dress they gave him and stood in his designated spot by the window, looking every bit as stiff and uncomfortable as he felt. He could feel eyes on him as people passed, some chuckling, some giving him strange looks, and it took every ounce of willpower not to scowl. Throughout the day, customers would stop and inspect the dress he wore, adjusting the fabric or holding different accessories up to him as if he were nothing more than a hanger. When a group of teenage girls giggled as they dared each other to come up and poke him, Ian gritted his teeth and forced himself to keep still, trying to ignore the heat creeping up his face. For hours, he stood there, shifting his weight as subtly as he could, trying not to lose his patience. Marion’s words echoed in his mind: “All you have to do is stand around and show off the clothes.” Easy, she had said. Right. Ian confronted his mother in the parking lot. "This is what they have me wearing!" he told her. "You're right," she said. "I'll talk to them. You would look much better in mauve or lilac." Made with Microsoft AI Image Generator |
